Second Careers: Two Tributaries in African Art probes this connection through a smart selection of stellar highlights from the&nbsp;Cleveland Museum of Art\u2019s African collection and loaned works by six contemporary African artists of different generations. The show includes seven writing boards, which children use to learn how to write Arabic script and memorize Qur&#8217;an verses. Ironically, it&#8217;s positioned en route to a&nbsp;Japanese calligraphy show&nbsp;that&#8217;s also on Mia&#8217;s second floor. &#8220;Calligraphy essentially is dancing words,&#8221; said Mohamed. What drew you to the project?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-dFBCk\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-lyfsW\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">A: To show the power of what a museum can be in the 21st century. It\u2019s not just a container of curiosities. That doesn\u2019t make<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-oiuwC\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">sense in Africa; there is no empire or sort of \u201cdiscovery\u201d of what America is or China is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-loxic\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-bi1gJ\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">But what is really critical is to deal with the<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-c6qsu\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">real elephant in the room, which is the impact of colonialism on the cultures<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-kZwc4\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">of Africa. That is the central discussion that the continent needs to have with itself about its own history and the structural destruction that happened with colonialism. Because actually, there is a myth that Africans know their culture, but a lot has been demonized because of colonialism, and there\u2019s a lot that\u2019s misunderstood because of the structures of colonialism \u2014 Christianity, Islam, etc. \u2014 that followed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-jeOgo\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-ruLui\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">I\u2019m not criticizing those religions, but they<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-qCR5j\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">kind of degraded the cultural heritage of the continent. So there is the relearning of the fundamental meaning of these objects. And that retraining justifies, for me, a rethinking of what a museum is on the continent. It\u2019s not going to be a Western model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-kW5zl\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-asHmO\"><strong class=\"brz-cp-color8\">Q: So putting the returned bronzes on display isn\u2019t the endpoint to you, but a beginning?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-xaD6B\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-gvRKf\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">A: Exactly: the beginning of the renaissance of African culture. You need the objects because the objects provide the provenance and the physicality that start to connect you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-ly8Lz\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-d5hIy\"><strong class=\"brz-cp-color8\">Q: When you talk about creating a non-Western museum, how will it be different? The images you\u2019ve released still have display cases with objects in them. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-ty201\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-tO1M0\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">A: When I say it will be different, I mean it\u2019ll be different in its meaning. It\u2019s different in what it\u2019s trying to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-q2lUy\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-ilEfZ\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">Yes, it will have vitrines with objects in them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-pnMpb\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">But it won\u2019t just be, \u2018Here\u2019s the restitution of these bronzes, and here they are in beautiful cases.\u2019 That would not attract locals \u2014 not many, maybe the elite. We\u2019ve spent a lot of time developing a museum as a community center that will be part of the community\u2019s daily rituals and lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-b1gqJ\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-nTgcz\"><strong class=\"brz-cp-color8\">Q: The design almost looks like a fort. What story are you hoping to tell with it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-css-dAuFa\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-fs-lg-16 brz-fs-sm-im-17 brz-fs-xs-im-17 brz-css-bX8TJ\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">A: The building has a little romantic narrative to it. I visited Benin City several times, and it\u2019s a place that for me is on<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-lg-400 brz-ft-google brz-ff-poppins brz-ls-lg-0 brz-ls-sm-im-0 brz-ls-xs-im-0 brz-lh-lg-1_4 brz-lh-sm-im-1_4 brz-lh-xs-im-1_3 brz-fs-lg-16 brz-fs-sm-im-17 brz-fs-xs-im-17 brz-css-kDSu1\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">par with the greatest places around the world \u2014 with Egypt, with Kyoto, with Athens. To understand sub-Saharan African culture, it\u2019s an epicenter. But you go now, and it\u2019s sort of a concrete jungle, so you need to excavate that past and bring it back to life.  <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"brz-columns brz-css-dJJQ5 brz-css-eP9J4\" data-brz-custom-id=\"rumsnvliuhlysomyyzklswyllvvurvbfenir\">\n<div class=\"brz-bg\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"brz-column__items brz-css-cdzyr brz-css-giV7u\">\n<div id class=\"brz-css-kdAad brz-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"brz-rich-text brz-rich-text__custom brz-css-cjgUo\" data-brz-custom-id=\"srmialchdwzdoljwtpztmztiwhdpbgdfgnww\">\n<div data-brz-translate-text=\"1\">\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-oCsBO\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">Thankfully, a lot of it is still underground. Sopart of what we\u2019re doing with the British Museum is excavating the old walls.I\u2019ve been obsessed with these walls \u2014 concentric circles that interact witheach other and create this kind of extraordinary pattern. From satelliteimages, it\u2019s bigger than the Great Wall of China. So we want an excavation sowe can make them visible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-y6CII\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-mKN2y\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">With the building, it\u2019s a kind of reenactment ofthe palace walls, with these turrets and pavilions appearing behind them, akind of abstraction of how Benin City would have looked before \u2014 what you\u2019dhave encountered if you came pre-colonization. It\u2019s trying to make a fragmentof the experience in a contemporary language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-rNjKX\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-nQ9QX\"><strong class=\"brz-cp-color8\">Q: The Benin Bronzes are what campaigners really want returned to Benin City and shown in this museum. What do those objects mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-uppRP\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-hDflH\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">A: It was profound the first time I saw them \u2014 and it still is \u2014 looking at these brass plaques that were in the palaces, and<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-g5Bu6\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">these extraordinary brass heads, this really dignified, incredible civilization. It burst immediately the image of these cultures that I had, that somehow it was kind of underdeveloped. It smashed through that and showed me, here is the artistry and the mastery of culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-eUdIm\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-pmF0N\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">I really started to do a lot of research into<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-kam2D\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">the Yoruba and Benin City when I was working on the Smithsonian, and that<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-dClvZ\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">really inspired my thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-t8OPC\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-sP_mR\"><strong class=\"brz-cp-color8\">Q: Your work on this museum puts you in the middle of the debate on whether objects should be returned to Africa from<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-mA1_I\"><strong class=\"brz-cp-color8\">Western museums. Where do you stand on that?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-rzZhy\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-eLEXl\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">A: Restitution has to happen, eventually. The<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-pGJP4\"><span class=\"brz-cp-color8\">objects need to be returned. In the 21st century, this is no longer a discussion. But the timeline, and how they\u2019re brought back, and the skill set to manage the objects has to be developed on the continent. And I think that is also part of the job of the museums and the cultures and the societies in the West that have these objects now: to support the building of this infrastructure, to allow countries to get these objects back. It\u2019s their cultural heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-opb_Y\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-jo2or\"><strong class=\"brz-cp-color8\">Q: Archaeological excavations often take<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"brz-ff-poppins brz-ft-google brz-fw-lg-400 brz-fw-sm-im-400 brz-fw-xs-im-400 brz-css-qD_9z\"><strong class=\"brz-cp-color8\">time.
